Participants will study Wayang Wong under a renowned practitioner and guardian of the form, Pujiyani. The workshop will focus on one scene that is inspired by historical stories from the Babad Tanah Jawi (The Chronicle of Java). The tembang (song) and tandang (movement) elements of Wayang Wong will be broken down and transmitted. Together with the master teacher, participants will discover how the body is shaped by history, tradition, training, life experiences, socio-cultural practices, and politics. They will explore the performing body as a cultural archive, capable of storing numerous memories of value systems, power relations, leadership concepts, ethics, and social behavior.
About Wayang Wong:
Wayang Wong is a traditional Javanese dance drama whose presentation structure is influenced by the Wayang Kulit performance. The performers dance as needed, speak in styles and tones appropriate to their roles, use songs to enhance expressivity, and wear costumes specific to their characters, following the customs of Wayang Kulit. A puppeteer (Dalang) leads the performance and provides narration from time to time.

This workshop will be conducted in Bahasa Indonesia, with English translation provided by Lyn Hanis.

Pujiyani and participants will present a work demonstration on 28 Nov, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at Esplanade Annexe Studio.
