Ulrich Meyer-Horsch is the artistic director of Schule für Schauspiel Hamburg, and co-founder of Michael Chekhov Europe (MCE).
He is an award-winning actor and theatre director with three decades of working experience in German state and regional theaters, including Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Schauspiel Frankfurt, and Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin. He has worked with Simon McBurney & Complicité, Augusto Boal and Yoshi Oida. For many years, he was the associate artistic director of Kreuzgangspiele Feuchtwangen, one of Germany’s biggest summer theatres.
Ulrich holds degrees in Acting, Theater Pedagogy, Theology, and Philosophy, from the universities of Heidelberg, Hamburg, and London (King’s College).
He is a renowned master teacher of the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique. In his work he incorporates organic breathing, the playfulness of games, and work with masks. His book Michael Tschechow: Der Schauspieler ist das Theater was published in 2022.
Since 1994, Ulrich has been teaching and directing throughout Europe, Russia, Turkey, Armenia, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel, United Arabic Emirates, Burundi, South Africa, Brazil, Uruguay, Cuba, Mexico, USA, Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia. He is a guest lecturer at Yeditepe University Istanbul, and serves on the board of directors of the Michael Chekhov Association (MICHA), New York.
Ulrich taught at ITI in 2018. This year he is returning to Singapore to direct ITI’s Final Year Production 2026 at Esplanade Theatre Studio.
