Sonia Kwek (b.1990) is an interdisciplinary artist working with and through performance, movement and the body im/material. Her work centres around themes of embodiment, (feminine) eroticism and myth, often through exploring corporeal sensualities, deconstructing archetypes and surfacing the latent unseen. Informed by her lifelong Butoh practice and background in intercultural theatre, she creates through transdisciplinary collaboration, embodied improvisation and a commitment to experimentation. Sonia performs, dramaturges, directs, choreographs and facilitates in projects spanning mediums and spaces, such as museum activations, short films, performance lectures, site-responsive happenings, intimate participatory experiences, immersive installations, nightlife gigs. Sonia seeks to centre the expression and evocation of the personal, visceral and poetic. 

Sonia graduated from the Intercultural Theatre Institute, training across traditional Asian theatre forms and contemporary theatre-making. She is a longtime associate artist with dance performance company P7:1SMA, and a core member and community class facilitator of the Singapore Butoh Collective. In 2024, Sonia founded trace life drawing, a platform to explore the intersection of life drawing and performance, organising experimental artist-led workshops and sessions with performance artists modelling. Sonia also works regularly as an educator for young people, coaching secondary school drama clubs and teaching drama programs.
